The Clinical Nurse Leader supports the Clinical Nurse Manager in leading, precepting and mentoring the nursing and midwifery staff as clinical expert in a unit/ service. The Clinical Nurse Leader is a key member of the interprofessional team and ensures that standards for nursing and midwifery care are adhered to at unit/service level while working within an assigned shift. The incumbent is accountable for shift coordination, patient flow, patient experience and resource allocation. The incumbent delivers clinical care for the majority of their time and supports the Clinical Nurse Manager to ensure successful commissioning. The Clinical Nurse Leader is professionally accountable to the Chief Nursing Officer.

The Clinical Nurse is responsible for competently providing safe and effective care to patients and families,. The Clinical Nurse assesses care needs, plans, and implements and evaluates programs of care. The Clinical Nurse is responsible for ensuring that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard.

The Clinical Nurse participates in the supervision and teaching of more junior and new members of staff within the unit. The Clinical Nurse is professionally accountable to the Chief Nursing Officer.

KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:Clinical Nurse  Leader:

  • Makes recommendations to the Manager regarding decisions that have a unit level impact.
  • Makes day to day decisions regarding unit operations that impact quality and efficiency of patient care.
  • Delivers nursing care to patients and rounds to support delivery of patient care.
  • Makes day to day decisions about staff allocations during shift to ensure that appropriate staff are allocated to the correct patients to promote safe patient care and the best learning environment.
  • Prioritizes high and low risk patients based on patient centered assessment and plan of care.
  • Provides shift supervision and guidance to staff in collaboration with Clinical Nurse Manager and Clinical Nurse Educator.
  • Coordinates complex patient care needs in collaboration with other clinical staff.
  • Ensures safe and high quality patient care during shift through appropriate and equitable allocation of work to the team based on patient acuity and skill mix.
  • Coordinates with capacity management on patient bed assignments.
  • Facilitates patient flow and coordinates patient’s activities and communication during shift.
  • Role-models patient experience principles, provides service recovery and identifies continuous improvement opportunities as required.
  • Identifies patient care issues and/or ways to improve and positively impact on the quality of care and patient outcomes.
  • Supports the Clinical Nurse Manager in the employee performance appraisal cycle objectively and assists with action plans arising from appraisals as necessary.
  • Contributes to the achievement of effective utilization of resources.
  • Leads Performance Improvement activities on the unit towards the achievement of agreed key performance indicators as assigned.
  • Supports the selection, development and retention of all staff.
  • Identifies cost efficiencies.

Clinical Nurse:

  • Maintains a professional demeanor and upholds the organizational values at all times.
  • Acts as a role model for junior staff and assists in promoting and sharing knowledge via mentorship/preceptorship programs in line with relevant research and evidence based practice.
